Belmont Abbey College, or the Abbey, is a 650-acre campus located in Belmont, N.C. ten miles west of Charlotte, N.C., the largest city and metropolitan area in the Carolinas. Benedictine Monks first established a community and school on the site of the former Caldwell Plantation just after the Civil War in 1876. It was chartered as a college in the state of North Carolina in 1886.

The faculty student ratio is 1 to 15. Approximately 15% of the teaching faculty are members of the religious community of the Abbey and reside in an on-campus monastery.

The student body is composed of approximately 900 men and women from 25 states and fifteen countries. Many Abbey students are originally from the Carolinas, New Jersey, Georgia, New York and Florida.

The purpose of BAC is the discovery, transmission and integration of knowledge within the Catholic, Benedictine, liberal arts tradition. As a Liberal Arts institution, Belmont Abbey College, in pursuing its educational mission seeks to assist its students to become both liberally educated and well prepared for the tasks and responsibilities of professional life. Our curriculum combines and integrates the traditional ends and means of liberal education with major and minor academic concentrations that help to prepare students for particular professions.

Belmont Abbey College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the B.A. and B.S. degrees, and the M.A. in Education. It is also a member of the North Carolina Association of Colleges and Schools and is on the approved list of the American Medical Association.
