It is the first Historically Black University to become an IBM ThinkPad University. Starting August 2000, all students will be issued mobile computers that will be integrated into the schools curriculum.
Founded in 1867, JCSU offers academically progressive programs, which are aimed at preparing students for excellence in the next millennium. Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Social Work degrees are available.
With an enrollment of approximately 1,400 students, the University takes pride in its small classes and family like atmosphere with a student/faculty ratio of 16:1.
The University completed its "Vision Shared: Campaign for the ‘90s" capital campaign raising $63.8 million with an original goal of $50 million. It completes the largest goal of any nonprofit in the Charlotte metropolitan area. It also marks the most successful capital campaign among any Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the Carolinas and the second largest campaign completed among all HBCUs.
One of the goals reached from the campaign is completion of a New Technology Center. Mathematics, Science, and Computer Technology are housed in the newly constructed $4 million facility.
