Livingstone College began in 1879 as an educational institution for aspiring clergy in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. At its beginning in 1796, A. M. E. Zion leaders realized that they had a responsibility to provide for educational needs of an under-served population. Dr. Joseph Charles Price was elected president of Zion Wesley Institute. In 1887, at the request of Price the North Carolina legislature changed the name of the College to Livingstone College in honor of David Livingstone, British Christian missionary, philanthropist and explorer.

In the year 2004 Livingstone College celebrated 125 years of providing quality liberal arts education. Our market niche includes the academic disciplines of the fine arts/ humanities, math, science, business, social work and teacher education. Livingstone has a legacy of producing graduates who excel in their pursuit of graduate and professional training and in their chosen careers.
